Timing Belt Removal
Timing Components:
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the engine coolant, refer to Cooling System.
3. Remove the splash shield, refer to Body and Frame.
4. Remove in the order indicated in the table.
Pulley Lock Bolt Removal Note:
a. Hold the pulley boss by using the Special Service Tool (SST) or an equivalent.
b. Using the SST, remove the pulley lock bolt.
Timing Belt Removal Note:
a. Install the pulley boss.
b. Install the pulley lock bolt.
c. Turn the crankshaft to align the timing marks.
d. Do not turn the crankshaft after aligning the timing marks.
e. Remove the pulley lock bolt and pulley boss.
f. Mark the timing belt rotation for proper reinstallation.
g. Loosen the tensioner lock bolt.
h. Protect the tensioner with a rag. Pry the tensioner outward with a bar.
i. Tighten the lock bolt with the tensioner spring fully extended.
j. Remove the timing belt.
5. Install in reverse order of removal.
Tensioner, Tensioner Spring Installation Note:
CAUTION: The following will damage the belt and shorten its life:
^ Forcefully twisting it.
^ Turning it inside out.
^ Bending it.
^ Allowing oil or grease on it.
a. Install the tensioner and the tensioner spring.
b. Protect the tensioner with a rag. Pry the tensioner outward by using a bar.
c. Temporarily tighten the tensioner lock bolt with the tensioner spring fully extended.
Timing Belt Installation Note:
a. Verify that the timing belt pulley mark is aligned with the timing mark.
b. Verify that the camshaft pulley marks are aligned with the seal plate marks. E for intake side, and I for exhaust side.
c. Install the timing belt so that there is no looseness at the idler side or between the camshaft pulleys.
d. Install the pulley boss and pulley lock bolt.
e. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise and face the pin on the pulley boss straight up. Do not turn the crankshaft counterclockwise.
f. Verify that the camshaft pulley marks are again aligned with the seal plate marks. If not aligned, remove the timing belt and repeat from tensioner installation.
g. Turn the crankshaft 1 and 5/6 turns clockwise and align the timing belt pulley mark with the tension set mark for proper timing belt tension adjustment.
h. Using the Special Service Tool (SST), loosen the pulley lock bolt and remove the bolt and pulley boss. Do not turn the crankshaft.
i. Verify that the timing belt pulley mark is aligned with the tension set mark.
j. Loosen the tensioner lock bolt to apply spring tension to the timing belt. Be sure not to apply tension other than that of the tensioner spring.
k. Tighten the tensioner lock bolt to 38-51 Nm (28-38 ft. lbs.).
l. Install the pulley boss and pulley lock bolt.
m. Turn the crankshaft 2 and 1/6 turns clockwise and verify that the timing marks are correctly aligned.
n. Measure the timing belt deflection by applying moderate pressure 98 N (22 lbs) midway between the camshaft pulleys. If the deflection is not within 9.0-11.5 mm (0.36-0.45 inch), repeat from step 10 above.
Pulley Lock Bolt Installation Note:
^ Hold the crankshaft by using the Special Service Tool (SST) and tighten the pulley lock bolt to 157-166 Nm (116-122 ft. lbs.).
6. Fill the radiator with the specified amount and type of coolant, refer to Cooling System.
7. Start the engine and check;
^ for engine coolant leakage.
^ the ignition timing and idle speed, refer to Powertrain Management.
^ the operation of the emission control system.
8. Check engine coolant level.
